Judo for our wives and daughters...or Girl Power?!?
We have often heard that 90+ percent of fights end up on the ground. In a society where we are often shocked by stories of bullying, violence and assaults, it's vitally important that our young girls are given the tools to defend themselves from assaults whether they are initiated from stand up or if they are taken to the ground.
Being thrown down to the ground is a shocking and damaging proposition. Without the knowledge of proper break falls, you risk having the wind knocked out of you, or worse yet, broken limbs, concussions, and the fear and confusion of being taken off your feet.
Being pinned is also a very unfamiliar feeling that can be demoralizing, claustrophobic and very exhausting. There is a certain sense of helplessness when someone is holding you down and you can’t do anything about it.

In fact, I remember when my daughter first started judo, every time she was pinned, she would turn red and start crying because she couldn't breathe (or rather was unfamiliar with how to relax, shift to decrease the weight of her opponent, and how to initiate escapes).
At Northland (NLD) Judo we are maximizing the slogan, "Girl Power!" We have a growing number of girls 4 years and older, as well as women participating in our Judo classes.
In the sport of Judo, you have three ways to win a match.
1) by a high impact throw
2) by pinning your opponent
3) by submitting your opponent with various chokes and arm bars (age appropriate).
At NLD Judo, we focus on technical drilling, games and live sparring with an eye towards "minimum effort, maximum efficiency" to master the three ways of achieving victory in Judo.
Our girls are learning not only how to compete to win against a resisting opponent, but to also learn how to resist and counter someone trying to take them down or trying to pin them. It's a critical skill to teach them how to relax under someone’s weight, how to adjust to escape and then to finesse their way out, or to maximize leverage to explode out.
This ability to spend thousands of hours learning how to throw, defend, counter, pin and escape not only give our girls a greater sense of confidence, but also engrains real life skills that could actually be used to defend and protect themselves.
At NLD Judo we provide our students with 4 or more coaches at any one time walking around with advanced back grounds in Judo, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with the same goal...creating judo girls who won't be victims but inspired little Warriorettes!
Please check out NLD Judo as we continue to work to build out "THE" dominant Midwest Youth Judo program. And yes, girls are invited! Bring your pink gi's!
